New York, 11 October 2012 - Ms. Urška Kramberger-Mendek, Legal adviser at the Permanent Mission of Slovenia to the UN addressed the Sixth (legal) Committee on the Agenda item 83: The rule of law at the national and international levels.
In her statement she commended the progress of the rule of law activities at the UN on the national and international levels. She highlighted the ascertainment that special attention should be devoted to the prevention of mass atrocities and the fight against impunity and stressed that the international criminal courts, in particular the ICC, are an important aspect in establishing the rule of law, prevention and peace. She presented the initiative of Slovenia, The Netherlands and Belgium regarding the strengthening the legal framework for judicial assistance, including extradition, between States in order to support effective prosecution of international crimes at a national level.
Further she emphasized that in first instance mass atrocities should be prevented, which is our shared responsibility and presented the initiative of Prime Minister Janša entitled “A World Free from Genocide.” that he put forward at the General Debate.
