Slovenia co-hosts a side event on complementarity on the margins of the Tenth Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court
New York, 13 December 2011 - Today Slovenia, Belgium and the Netherlands organized a side event on Complementarity: Proposal for a new legal instrument related to inter state cooperation in criminal matters and prosecution of ICC core crimes. The side event was aimed to present the outcome of the experts meeting held in The Hague on 22 November 2011.
A growing number of States are of the opinion that international cooperation in criminal matters concerning investigation and prosecution of international crimes at the national level is insufficient and should be enhanced. Mutual legal assistance is essential for the investigation and prosecution of international crimes and is also an effective way to exchange best practices, know-how and expertise.
The side event was attended by more than 70 delegates from all over the world and the idea of a new international legal framework for international cooperation in criminal matters was warmly welcomed and perceived as useful and needed.
