Ambassador Å tiglic Delivers a Statement on the Issue of the scope and application of the principle of Universal Jurisdiction

 

New York, 13 October 2010 - Ambassador Sanja Å tiglic, Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the UN addressed the UN General Assembly Sixth Committee on the issue of the scope and application of the principle of Universal Jurisdiction.

In her statement Ambassador Štiglic stressed that the purpose of universal jurisdiction is a noble one – to ensure that gross violations of human rights and humanitarian law that shock the human conscience do not go unpunished even if the perpetrators remove themselves from the jurisdiction of the State where the crimes have been committed. It sends a message to potential perpetrators – that there is no impunity.
