Dr. Petrińć, President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia, participates in the UN Interactive Thematic debate on Rule of Law and Global Challenges

 

New York, 11 April 2011 - Dr. Ernest Petrińć, President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia, participated in the UN Interactive Thematic debate on Rule of Law and Global Challenges.

On Monday, 11 April 2011, the President of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly organized an Informal Thematic debate on Rule of Law and Global Challenges as a key step in the lead up to the high-level meeting on the rule of law scheduled for the first week of the Assembly‚Äôs sixty-seventh session in 2012. The one-day interactive debate was opened by H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, President of the General Assembly and H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, UN Secretary-General, followed by H.E. Ms. Christiana Tah, Minister of Justice of Liberia, and H.E. Mr. Michael Spindelegger, Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria as keynote addresses. The opening was followed by two thematic panel discussions on ‚ÄúRule of law and conflict situations‚ÄĚ and ‚ÄúRule of Law and Development‚ÄĚ. Upon the invitation of the President of the General Assembly Dr. Ernest Petrińć participated in the Panel entitled ‚ÄúRule of law and conflict situations‚ÄĚ and stressed that the rule of law should be approached at both the national and international levels. The panel was moderated by H.E. Prince Zeid Ra‚Äôad Zeid Al-Hussein, Permanent Representative of Jordan to the UN. Other speakers included: Ms. Navi Pillay, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; Mr. Jean-Marie Gu√©henno, former Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations; and Mr. Michael von der Schulenburg, Executive Representative of the Secretary-General in Sierra-Leone.
