1 October 2013 is the International Day of Older Persons

New York, 1 October 2013 - For the first time in human history, in 2050, there will be more persons over 60 than children in the world. International Day of Older Persons is celebrated to highlight the opportunities and challenges of an ageing population in the 21st century and to promote the development of a society for all ages.

While participating at the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action commemorative event last week, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia Erjavec stressed the need to further the protection of rights of older persons nationally and globally. He commended the engagements of Latin American partners, such as Argentina, who have already actively contributed to this end:

"As other countries we too are faced with demographic changes and the need to be more responsive to the needs and specificities of the elderly as ever growing part of our populations."
