Slovenia delivers a statement at the Security Council's Protection of Civilians Debate

New York, 10 May 2011 - ChargĂ© d'affaires a.i. Simona Leskovar spoke at the UN Security Council open debate on protection of civilians in armed conflict under the French Presidency of the Council.

CDA Leskovar welcomed the fact that the Council started to address concerns for the protection of civilians more systematically. She stressed the need that all parties to the conflict, including non-state actors, must comply with the international humanitarian, human rights and refugee law. Ending impunity is essential for the war-torn societies to recover as well as to prevent any future human rights abuses. There can be no sustainable peace without justice. She reiterated Slovenia's support to all international criminal tribunals, especially ICC.

CDA Leskovar also pointed out the impact that explosive weapons pose to civilians and emphasized Slovenia’s commitment in the field of mine action through various projects carried out by the International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance (ITF), established by the Government of Slovenia.
