Ms Violeta Neubauer re-elected as a member of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) for the period 2011–2014

 

New York, 28 June 2010 – At UN Headquarters in New York, Slovenian candidate Violeta Neubauer was today convincingly re-elected as a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

Ms Violeta Neubauer, Co-ordinator for international co-operation in the Office of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for Equal Opportunities and currently member of the CEDAW Committee, was one of the 21 candidates for 12 free positions on the Committee. She received 130 votes and was re-elected for another 4-year term.

The CEDAW Committee is the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. The Convention was adopted in 1979 and has 186 State Parties.

The Committee consists of 23 experts on women’s rights from around the world and holds sessions three times a year in New York and Geneva.
